I read about this product on a baking blog in an entry about how to make black icing that doesn't taste terrible, and this product definitely came through! You can get anything from a light grey color to a deep black and the icing tastes exactly like it does in any other color! It will stain things (counter, your mouth, etc) when wet but after the icing dries hard on my sugar cookies there's hardly any mouth staining--a big plus when you use it in a dish for a party. No one wants to walk around with stained grey teeth!

I love-love-love Americolor Super Black Soft Gel! I used to spend so much time mixing Royal icing to get a black color. Either the icing would get over mixed or my wrist would be sore. Sometimes I would have to add cocoa powder to the icing to get a deep black. Now with Americolor super black soft gel paste, I just squeeze a few big drops and it instantly turns dark rich black, and no more cocoa powder. I will never use anything else again. 4.5 oz is about a medium size bottle. Good size.

I used this gel paste to blacken chocolate frosting so that we could have black frosting to decorate a panda bear cake. I chose paste over liquid dye because I had read that the large amount of black liquid dye needed to make black frosting could cause frosting to become bitter. You really did not need to use very much of the gel paste to get a nice deep black. Our panda cake was a hit!
